Quando Cameron Crowe resolveu filmar "Singles", o movimento Grunge de Seattle ainda não havia explodido e recebido a notoriedade que atingiria pouco tempo depois.
 
Era para ser uma comédia romântica tão somente e por acaso ambientada numa circunstância onde alguns personagens tinham ligação com a música, mas providencialmente a ascensão de tal cena musical viria a calhar, conforme explicarei a seguir.
 
No início, era uma estória centrada em alguns amigos que moravam num condomínio e suas idas e vindas nos relacionamentos afetivos.
 
Um dos personagens, era Cliff Poncier, interpretado por Matt Dillon, que é componente de uma banda de Rock e sonha com o estrelato. Sua namorada é Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda), uma garçonete.
 
O outro casal é formado por Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) e Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgwick).
 
Nada aconteceria de excepcional no filme que justificasse um maior interesse do que geralmente um expectador de sessão da tarde lhe devotasse, mas o filme acabou ganhando atrativos posteriormente, de forma quase acidental.
 
O primeiro fato : Quando foi filmado, no final de 1989, a cena do Grunge ainda não havia explodido. Portanto, a presença de bandas reais como Soundgarden, Alice in Chains e Pearl Jam, não tinha nenhum apêlo comercial em princípio.
 
Mas o filme atrasou e quando foi lançado em 1992, tudo havia mudado. O movimento explodiu de tal forma, que os produtores trataram logo de lançá-lo. 
 
A despeito do maior expoente do movimento grunge não estar no filme (o Nirvana de Kurt Cobain), criou-se a expectativa no público de que era um filme falando da cena grunge de Seattle, com uma estória de amor à tiracolo, quando na verdade, era justamente o contrário.
 
O segundo fato, foi no sucesso inesperado que o filme causou. Com isso, despertou o interesse de executivos da TV que convidaram Cameron Crowe a produzir a estória como série.
 
Ele não topou, mas eles levaram adiante o projeto e transformando-o substancialmente, saindo de cena a conexão com a música e ficando só a ideia de amigos de vinte e poucos anos vivendo no mesmo condomínio, entre aventuras românticas e confusões engraçadas. Surgiu então, "Friends", um dos maiores sucessos da TV americana, de todos os tempos.
 
Há de se ressaltar também a presença de vários atores importantes fazendo pontas ( Victor Garber, Eric Stoltz, Paul Giamatti e até uma rara aparição do diretor Tim Burton).
 
O figurino usado pelo personagem vivido por Matt Dillon, era proveniente do guarda-roupa pessoal do baixista do Pearl Jam. Mais realismo, impossível. 
 
A banda fictícia do personagem Cliff Poncier, é o Pearl Jam. No filme, a banda se chama "Citizen Dick" e segundo o Camerom Crowe, Citizen foi homenagem ao filme "Citizen Kane" e o "Dick", bem...deixa para lá...
 
No Brasil o filme também chegou aos cinemas no final de 1992 e com a aura de ser um filme sobre o movimento grunge. Lembro-me de ter assistido numa noite de novembro de 1992 e ver vários músicos da cena noventista paulista e influenciados pelo grunge, que era o grito da moda à época, na mesma sessão em que fui assistir.
 
Na cena em que o personagem Cliff Poncier visita o túmulo real de Jimi Hendrix em Seattle, alguns gritinhos ecoaram pela sala de cinema. Pensei comigo : Ainda resta alguma esperança, sabem ou imaginam quem foi Jimi Hendrix...
 
Mas o Cameron Crowe demoraria ainda alguns anos para acertar a mão e fazer "Almost Famous", este sim um filme explícito sobre o Rock setentista e autobiográfico ao enfocar sua própria vida antes de se tornar diretor de cinema, quando era crítico de Rock, da Revista Rolling Stone.
 
Dá para ver "Singles", desde que você o assista desprovido de qualquer expectativa a não ser assistir uma comédia romântica água-com-açúcar, ou se for muito fã do movimento grunge de Seattle do início dos anos noventa.
 
Nesse caso, vista a sua camisa de flanela, uma bermuda bem puída e bon voyage...
